What Does the X in a Hat Rating Mean?

X-factor labeling can be one of the most confusing parts of buying a hat.

The X generally refers to the quality and fur content of the hat body. A higher-quality fur felt will usually produce a finer, more durable hat. However, there is no universal industry standard governing X ratings.

A hat labeled 100X by one maker may not contain the same materials as a 100X hat from another. Every company can use its own grading system, which makes it important to ask what the rating actually means.

• 100X: Beaver blend
• 200X: 100% pure beaver
• 500X: 100% pure belly-hair beaver
• Mink: Fine fur used in premium blends
• Chinchilla: Fine fur used in premium blends

The rating alone should never be the only information you consider.

Questions to Ask Before Buying a Hat

Ask the maker or retailer:

• What kind of fur is used?
• What is the actual fur content?
• Is the hat made from a blend?
• Where was the hat body made?
• Where was the finished hat made?

The answers will tell you much more than the X printed on the label.

Rabbit and Beaver Fur Felt

Some companies describe rabbit fur as European hare. Hare and rabbit fur are widely available and generally less expensive than beaver.

Rabbit fur does not felt as densely as beaver fur. A rabbit-fur hat body may need to be thicker or more heavily stiffened to maintain its shape, and it may be more susceptible to losing that shape through wear.

Beaver fur is valued for its density, durability, weather resistance, and ability to hold a refined shape. It is widely regarded as a benchmark for high-quality fur-felt hats.

Choosing the Right Quality Level

A beaver-blend hat can be a good entry point for someone purchasing a first custom hat.

A 100% beaver hat can work beautifully as either a dress hat or a working ranch hat. Beaver felt offers the strength and durability needed to stand up to regular wear and changing weather.

Belly-hair beaver represents another level of refinement. Mink and chinchilla may also be incorporated into premium felt blends to create an exceptionally soft finish while retaining enough body to hold the hat’s shape.

Look Beyond the Label

An impressive X rating does not automatically guarantee an impressive hat.

Ask questions, understand the materials, and learn how the maker defines the grade. An informed purchase begins with knowing exactly what you are buying.
