When the original Dusty’s Originals website launched, it marked the public beginning of a vision that had been taking shape for many years.
The idea evolved from dreams of opening an art gallery into something more personal: a place for handcrafted, custom, and original pieces created by Dusty and other artisans.
In many ways, it became an online gallery for wearable art.
Why Original Work Matters
Going out on your own means being willing to push limits.
For Dusty, building an independent creative business created the freedom to explore ideas, develop distinctive pieces, and make work that did not need to fit within someone else’s expectations.
The goal was never simply to fill a website with products. It was to create a place that inspired people to seek out meaningful, skillfully made objects.
The Meaning of Handcrafted
The word handcrafted is used often, but it should mean something.
To make something by hand is to transform an idea into a finished piece through skill, patience, and a series of deliberate decisions. True handcrafted work is not simply assembled from mass-produced components and given an artistic label.
It begins with a creative vision.
That vision may move from a sketch to a pattern, a mold, a casting, a shaped hat body, a piece of jewelry, or an embellishment made one element at a time.
The finished object carries the evidence of the hands that made it.
Hats as Wearable Art
Dusty’s hats begin with imagination.
Some designs start as custom concepts translated into dimensions and proportions. Others begin with an existing hat body that is reshaped and transformed through color, ribbon, feathers, jewelry, vintage elements, and other carefully chosen details.
Feather embellishments are built one feather at a time. Vintage baubles and decorative elements are collected from different places and selected for the story they bring to the finished piece.
Each hat is treated as an individual work.
Even when a familiar material or silhouette is used, the final Original is designed to stand on its own.

Custom work is a collaboration between craft, imagination, and the person who will ultimately wear it.
The photographs are only a starting point. They should never limit what someone is willing to imagine.
