Sunset Gus
Sunset Gus is Dusty’s interpretation of the classic Gus hat, a Western silhouette famously associated with Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove. But the inspiration behind this design comes from a story much closer to home. Dusty’s dad, Raymond, had a reputation for raising and selling great horses. When the crew from Lonesome Dove came to the ranch scouting horses, a beautiful palomino named Sunset caught their attention. They wanted him for Gus to ride. Raymond’s answer was simple: “You have to ask the boss.” The boss was Dusty’s mom, and her answer was just as simple: “That’s my horse, and he’ll stay here.” So there were no ranch horses headed for the screen that day. Sunset stayed with the family, where he lived for more than 30 years. Sunset Gus carries that memory into a hand-shaped Western design with a 5-inch crown and 3 3/4-inch unbound brim. The version shown is Silver Belly, finished with a navy velvet hatband and Dusty’s individually assembled feather embellishment. Handmade in Dusty’s Sturgis, South Dakota studio, Sunset Gus can be commissioned in different materials, colors, and finishing details while retaining the distinctive character of the original design.
