Renegade Boss of the Plains
Renegade Boss of the Plains is Dusty’s interpretation of the evolution of the original Boss of the Plains hat, a Western style dating to the 1860s. As working hats evolved, their shapes changed with the people wearing them—including upturned sides that allowed a cowboy more room to swing a rope while giving the hat its distinctive Western profile. Dusty named this design Renegade after reading about the arrival of Calamity Jane, Wild Bill Hickok, Charlie Utter, and Dick “Bloody Dick” Seymour in Deadwood, South Dakota. Their reputations, self-made personas, elaborate Western attire, and unmistakable hats captured the rebellious spirit she associated with the design. The example shown was hand-shaped in black 200X pure beaver with a 5 1/2-inch crown, 3-inch unbound brim, grosgrain hatband, and feather embellishment.
