Slim Buttes Campaign

Slim Buttes Campaign is Dusty’s interpretation of the traditional campaign hat, a style with roots in the practical hats worn by U.S. Army troops and later closely associated with park rangers and Scouts. For Dusty, though, the name Slim Buttes is personal. Her dad Raymond grew up on a ranch in the Slim Buttes, and stories of the area were part of her childhood. She remembers hearing about family running moonshine from the ranch to Deadwood and stories from her dad Duane about her great-great-grandmother Nanny serving as a midwife in the Slim Buttes. Dusty has memories of her own there, too—including gathering cattle and one particularly memorable ride that ended with her being bucked off a horse and breaking both arms. Unable to get back in the saddle, she made the long walk back to the pickup and trailer with what she describes as “two broken wings.” The design carries that rugged character in a tall, hand-shaped 6-inch crown and broad 4-inch unbound brim. The version shown is crafted in Granite with a dolphin-grey velvet hatband. Handmade in Dusty’s Sturgis, South Dakota studio, Slim Buttes Campaign can be commissioned in different materials, colors, and finishing details while retaining the distinctive shape and story behind the original design.
