"Derby. The very word in my mind conjures up grandiose visions of beautiful horses, a glorious spring day, Kentucky-pristine white fences, mint juleps, high fashion and the most acceptable reason in the United States to don a beautiful, large, extravagant hat.
Since the Kentucky Derby [Link https://www.kentuckyderby.com] was established, it has become a bastion of the crème-de-la crème. Eating, drinking and looking one’s best. I have never been to the Kentucky Derby, but delight in the concept. “Someday,” I tell myself. “Someday I will make it there.”
I am not going to say that it is because I would enjoy visiting Kentucky, buying the perfect outfit, eating fabulous food and possibly drinking too much… my real motivation is to wear a fabulous Kentucky Derby hat. I have loved hats from the time I was little. My great-grandmother, Tilda, a very fancy woman in her own right, had several hats. I actually harbored her hat collection, for several years. In my early 20’s I moved yearly and carefully toted them all along with me. My Dad and his wife now hold them in their home. I always considered them pretty, little works of art. Their style ranged from demure and safe to saucy with a “look at me!!” sense to them.
My Mother’s birthday is May 7th and each and every year I vow to have a Derby Party in her honor. I have the entire party planned out in my head but then life takes over, and it doesn’t materialize. This year, however, I have secured a crucial piece. I have THE HAT. This is going to be my year to make this happen. I must rise to the task.
